Analysis

This page is unfinished. The numbers, the graph and the word lists below are real and up to date, but more is planned for it.

Each point is where the two numbers stood at the end of that day.

This month

A day lights up when you marked a text as read or answered flashcards. The more you did, the brighter it is.

How your cards look, and how FSRS decides when to show you each word.

Cards

Example sentence on the front

Every card shows the story sentence its word came from. Tick this and it appears on the front, under the word; untick it and the front is just the word. Either way the back shows that sentence with its English translation, because a translation belongs on the answer side.

Daily limits

New words/day

Maximum reviews/day

How much work a day can hold. Words part-way through their learning steps always come back, whatever these say.

Memory

Desired retention 0.90

The share of due words you want to get right. Higher means shorter gaps and more reviews; lower means longer gaps and more forgetting. 0.90 is the recommended starting point.

Maximum interval (days)

Learning

Learning steps

Relearning steps

The short gaps a word goes through before its first real interval, and again after you forget it. Write them as times, e.g. 1m 10m or 15m 1h. Leave empty to skip straight to real intervals.

Next day starts at (hour)

FSRS

Spread reviews out (fuzz)

Parameters (21 numbers)

The dials FSRS-6 turns to model your memory. These defaults were fitted on a very large set of real reviews. Leave them alone unless you have your own optimised set to paste in.

Developer

Paste in a story and the app turns it into one: split into words, translated, and read aloud. Stories made this way live in this browser (see CLAUDE.md §18), not in the app's own files.

Create a story

Paste in a text and it becomes a story you can read.

The story

Title

Language

Difficulty

The language and difficulty are shown on the story's card on the front page. The language is also what the translator is told it is reading, so it is worth getting right.

Text

One paragraph per line; blank lines are ignored. The text is split into sentences and words automatically, following the same rules the hand-written stories use (CLAUDE.md §4) — elisions like l' are split off, punctuation stays attached to its word.

English

Translate this text

Every sentence gets an English translation, and every word — or expression, like il y a — gets its meaning in that sentence. Leave it off and the story is still saved, just without English.

Recording

Read this text aloud

The recording comes back with the timing of every character in it, which is turned into the per-word timings the read-along needs — so the words light up as they're spoken and you can click one to jump there, exactly like the hand-recorded stories. A long text is recorded in several pieces and joined back together.

Use a recording of your own

Used if no recording is made above (the box is unticked, or the voice isn't available). It plays, but without timings the words can't light up.

Stories

Limits

Free — words a month

Paid — words a month

How much text an account may turn into stories in a calendar month. This is the one that costs you money: translating and recording are both billed by the word. The month rolls over on the 1st.

Free — saved words

Paid — saved words

How many words an account may keep in its vocabulary list. A cap on the paid tier is worth having even when you mean "unlimited" — it is what stops one account filling this browser's storage.

Translation

API address

Model

Every story is translated by this one model. Any OpenAI-compatible address works; OpenRouter reaches nearly every model there is. Press Load models to read the list from the provider itself, and Test it to translate one real sentence and see the English, the word meanings and how long it took. Pick for quality: the model thinks before it answers, and a story is translated a few sentences at a time, three at once.

Voice and keys

The keys live on the server, not here. Translating and recording run in two Supabase Edge Functions, translate and speak, which hold the keys as secrets — so no reader's browser ever sees them, and the monthly word allowance above is counted on the server where nobody can change it. To set or change a key: Supabase dashboard → Edge Functions → Secrets, TRANSLATE_API_KEY and ELEVENLABS_API_KEY.
